Beauval landfill no longer taking large waste items

The Beauval landfill is no longer accepting large waste that comes from renovations and construction.

The village announced on July 24 that effective immediately, the landfill will not accept large waste items as the landfill is in the process of decommissioning.

Mayor Nick Daigneault said while it is the season for renovations, in order to make their next emergency cell last, residents and contractors will have to rent a bin from a waste disposal company from now on for any large waste.

“A lot of these northern communities have social housing so when the budgets come down in April they plan a lot of renovations in the housing units,” Daigneault said. “It leads to a lot of large waste and it shouldn’t be a surprise to them as well. We did talk to our regional housing manager and let them know our dump is getting filled too darn fast.”

The village is applying for another emergency cell to allow only residential waste into the landfill for the next year.

“We hope there will be a more permanent solution for solid waste management,” Daigneault said. “If not we’ll likely have to look at other options such as pickup service or shipping it out ourselves by purchasing a garbage compactor truck to ship to another nearby regional landfill like Meadow Lake or Canwood.”

Daigneault said the previous emergency cell lasted around a year, so they’re trying to limit the amount of large waste that would go into the landfill.

“We’re not the only community who’s unfortunately stuck in this situation,” Daigneault said. “We have Île-à-la-Crosse who’s also on the brink of their licence expiring and Patuanak and some other locations as well.”

The mayor said he and council members from the northern communities have been meeting with the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association and other agencies since the beginning of the year to discuss a regional waste facility.

“Landfills aren’t cheap to construct, especially with the new environmental legislations. When we looked at a two cell system for our landfill, that Bullee Consulting helped us plan, we were looking at a one point some million dollar project,” he said.

A consulting company has been hired to meet with all the landfill operators in the region to plan a regional waste facility that meets the needs of everyone.

They are currently looking at two business plans. One regional landfill in either Beauval or Buffalo Narrows or regional landfills in both villages that would service communities from Green Lake to La Loche.

Daigneault said he hopes the company will have a plan ready by December as they are working on readying what would be a longer term project in a year.

“It’s one of those things that’s been dropped on your lap, in normal situations there would have been a contingency fund to help with the decommissioning process and a plan to work on the next landfill,” he said.
