Youth summer day camps returning to Meadow Lake

Jun 3, 2021 | 4:23 PM

The City of Meadow Lake’s parks and recreation department announced summer day camps will be returning this year.

Throughout July and August, six one-week day camps will be offered by the City. Each of the day camps runs between Monday and Friday for the designated theme. Camps are currently set at $150 per week, featuring activities related to the week’s theme.

Parks and recreation manager Regan Beck explained the camps had not been offered for quite some time, and the return of the programming has been welcomed by the community in the early stages.

“We’re really excited about them. It’s nice to provide more options for kids in the summer time and for parents too,” Beck said. “It’s something we haven’t done in Meadow Lake in quite a few years, so we’re looking forward to it. It seems there’s a lot of excitement, initially. It’ll be good to have this program for the youth in Meadow Lake and the surrounding area.”

Brittani Duxbury, aquatic manager, explained all of the camps over the six-week period will include generic crafts, be active and inclusive with swimming or spray park for three days and take the youth on field trips in the city. She added each week will also feature a unique theme with specialized activities included in the programming.

The first themed camp, under the big top, is a circus-themed agility-focused camp that will feature slack line courses and circus-themed crafts. Splash of colour is an art-themed camp that will include activities such as painting and tie-dyeing.

To the woods is centered on nature and outdoor camping activities. Scavenger hunts, nature walks and s’mores, if permitted by public health guidelines, will be among the activities included in the camp. When the Olympics kick off on July 23, the City of Meadow Lake will feature its going for the gold camp, which will be designed around sports and physical activity. Participants could engage in obstacle courses, swimming and making craft torches.

Hooray for the heroes focuses on superheroes and local heroes including the fire department. Crafts include making capes while also providing youth with the opportunity to engage with members of the fire department and other local heroes. Around the world is a multicultural camp designed to explore a new country and its culture each day of the camp with possible guest speakers attending to share their culture.

Registration can be completed at the City of Meadow Lake’s website. More activities and guests will be announced as they become confirmed later in the season.
