SIRT investigating Maidstone RCMP after failed wellness check

Apr 5, 2024 | 5:32 PM

The provincial body that investigates possible police misconduct is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 68-year-old man in the RM of Britannia on April 3.

According to a statement from the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) a relative of the senior first called police just after 7 am because they had been told he was dead. The call was sent to a member of the Maidstone detachment.

The relative called back again about eight hours later asking for an update and it was after this that an officer from the Maidstone detachment went to the rural location to check on the man

He left the detachment at 4:39 pm but at 5:00, a second relative called and said they had gone to the home and checked and the man was alive, but seriously injured.

The officer arrived shortly after, found the injured man and called EMS to take him to the hospital. He later died.

The team have now begun their investigation to see if proper police policy was in place, “including the actions and omissions associated with the police response to the initial call for service,” and the final report will come within 90 days following the investigation.

Meanwhile, the RCMP are investigating the death.
