Fatal collisions rising in Saskatchewan as RCMP investigator sees same preventable mistakes
Saskatchewan is on pace for its deadliest year on the roads in nearly a decade, and an RCMP collision investigator says many of the deaths he’s seeing could have been prevented.
Cpl. Robert Topping has attended more than 250 collision scenes during his 14 years with the Saskatchewan RCMP, including almost all involving a fatality. Coincidentally, during the interview for this news article, he was interrupted by a call to another fatal crash.
In his nine years with the RCMP’s collision investigation unit, he said two factors repeatedly stand out: alcohol at the scene and improper seatbelt use.
“There’s a lot of scenes that I’ve been to that if the person would have been wearing their seatbelt, they would have been alive, but they chose not to wear their seatbelt.”
