Meadow Lake, Prince Albert tribal councils join forces with SPSA for wildfire plan
First Nations leaders from Prince Albert Grand Council and Meadow Lake Tribal Council said a new wildfire partnership with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is meant to bring local crews and Indigenous knowledge into the response earlier, before small fires force evacuations.
The three organizations signed a memorandum of understanding in Prince Albert on Tuesday that formalizes collaboration on wildfire prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
The agreement includes engagement before and after wildfire seasons and work through a First Nations Wildfire Strategy Working Group, with Indigenous Services Canada and the Canadian Forest Service also expected to be part of the discussions.
PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte said First Nations communities have generations of wildfire knowledge that can still shape modern response.
