UPCOMING CEREMONY

Meadow Lake Legion to launch poppy campaign, honour Wainwright victims

Oct 22, 2026 | 3:31 PM

A short ceremony in Meadow Lake on Friday will mark the launch of the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poppy campaign while also remembering the victims of the recent fire at the Wainwright military base.

“The young men were our future peacekeepers,” said Jo-Anne Carter, president of Legion Branch 76. “When something like this happens, we’re just reminded how quickly life can change and how something can affect the whole entire community.”

The memorial portion of the ceremony will pay tribute to those who died in the explosion, with the local Legion showing its support through a monetary donation.

“Even though we’re miles apart, we’re connected by the same spirit of service and care for one another,” she added.

The ceremony will also officially launch this year’s poppy campaign, which encourages residents to wear a poppy in the lead-up to Remembrance Day to honour those who have served for their country.

As part of the event, Meadow Lake Mayor Merlin Seymour will be presented with the first poppy. Carter said the presentation has been a longstanding tradition, and Legion members are looking forward to getting this year’s campaign underway.

The campaign serves as an annual reminder of the importance of remembering Canada’s veterans and recognizing the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, both past and present.
