Dental therapy program aims to bring care closer to northern communities
Training dental therapists in Prince Albert and La Ronge could help bring more care to northern Saskatchewan communities, while supervised student clinics offer reduced-cost treatment closer to home.
Dr. Walter Yim, assistant director, academic, of the University of Saskatchewan’s dental therapy program, said high cavity rates, particularly among children, and limited access to services remain significant challenges.
“There are a lot of patients that travel many hours to PA or Saskatoon or Regina from the north in order to access dental care,” he said.
The program recruits students from remote regions, Indigenous communities and other underserved areas. Dental therapists learn to perform fillings and simple extractions, along with developing community and individual prevention plans.
