IOC’s Hickey declines questions on ticket scalping in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO — A high-ranking Olympic official is declining to answer police questions related to alleged ticket scalping during last month’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

A police official said Olympic Council of Ireland President Patrick Hickey declined to answer questions. Hickey also did not comment upon leaving a Rio de Janeiro station.

Hickey was jailed during the Olympic Games. He was set free last week after a judge ruled that he wasn’t a risk to the investigation. His passport has been confiscated, and he must remain in Brazil until the probe is concluded.

Police have said Hickey plotted with businessmen to transfer tickets illegally to a non-authorized vendor that was allegedly selling them for high fees.

Hickey has stepped aside “temporarily” as an IOC member and all his other Olympic positions.
