Spring-like weather coming to an end

The volatile weather we often see in March will make an appearance on the weekend.

Sunshine and warmth today will give way to snow, wind, and cooler temperatures tomorrow.

“We have a pretty vigorous system on the way,” Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW. “It’s going to develop in Alberta and then make its way across the northern grain belt, central Saskatchewan, and bring some fairly significant snow with it.”

The areas most likely to be hit by the heaviest snow include Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Lloydminster, and Kindersley.

Lang said the snow should start to develop early Saturday morning and continue through the day before tapering off on Sunday.

“We’re looking for upwards of 10 to 15 cm of snow with this, the temperature is going to start falling during the day,” Lang said.

The wind will also pick up significantly starting on Saturday, leading to blowing and drifting snow, and increased wind chills.

Lang recommended those thinking of travelling tomorrow should check the Highway Hotline before heading out.

The rapid weather changes are a fact of life during this time of year, she said.

“We often get the heaviest snowfall in March and in the fall, and that’s because the sun is starting to get strong now, but there’s still cold air lurking to the North,” Lang said.

She said the cold air meets the moist warm air and that clash can lead to systems with significant snow.

After the system leaves, temperatures will remain on the cool side until improving by the middle of next week.
