Sask. wildland firefighters, equipment heading to PEI to help with recovery efforts

Saskatchewan will be lending a hand to the recovery efforts in Prince Edward Island following post-tropical storm Fiona.

On Friday, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency announced its sending personnel and equipment to PEI to support cleanup efforts.

“Following the devastation last month, the SPSA is pleased to support the province of P.E.I. with the cleanup,” SPSA President Marlo Pritchard said in a statement. “The people of P.E.I. have been working tirelessly, and we are proud to help as they recover.”

The SPSA said that 15 wildland firefighters and one liaison officer will be based out of Charlottetown for two weeks. The firefighters are bringing chainsaws and personal protective equipment (PPE) to clear fallen trees that damaged structures and continue to block roads.

The SPSA firefighters are from bases across the province and will leave from the Prince Albert Airport on Friday.

The firefighters are helping with disaster response, at the request of the P.E.I. government.

Post-tropical storm Fiona hit PEI and several areas of Atlantic Canada on September 24 after devastating areas of the Caribbean as a Category 4 Hurricane less than 10 days before.

The storm has already been declared the costliest weather event in Atlantic Canada’s history.
