NEW YORK — Canada’s Carson Branstine is one win away from a berth in the women’s main draw at the U.S. Open after a 6-4, 7-5 win over Czechia’s Linda Fruhvirtova in second-round qualifying action Wednesday.
The 25-year-old dual citizen, who was born in California but represents her mother’s home country, converted all five of her break point chances and hit 22 winners to Fruhvirtova’s eight.
Fruhvirtova, who converted three of seven break points, hindered her cause with 10 double faults.
Branstine will face Robin Montgomery of the United States on Thursday for one of the remaining main-draw spots up for grabs.
